Secret Origins of Professor Gideon Sarkhon
Originally,I wrote a short story called the Last Fair, that featured
a New York Cabbie,Sgt Archie Venzenzo encountering an ancient sorcerer named
Thuzan Thune. The wizard was travelling to the United Nation to speak to the leaders
of the Free World on an important matter to save the world from some immenant
doom.Thuzan Thune, needed to convince the cabbie he was real, while travelling
across Manhatten. In the end,Archie stated if you had those powers, while just
teleport me,the cab and himself across the city.Thuzan Thune thus does so and
departs, leaving three small, magical silver balls in the back seat.Unknown to
him, those are Atlantean Wizards form of currency-more valueable than money and
capable of proforming magic tricks.Dissbelieving,Archie tosses out the cab
window, but the silver balls simply bounce a few times on the pavement-then
rise, turn and follow after the yellow cab.At the stories conclusion,Archie
Venchenzo see’s another opportunity for his Last Fare, believing Thuzan Thune cheated
him, when he did not.Stepping out of the fob,a small, diminutive figure approaches
and steps into his yellow cabs back feat.Sgt,Venchenzo turns and says ‘’where
mack?-only to see a small pointed alien Zark‘’Saying Please take me to your
leaders.’’
I adapted this story into a comic, and renamed Thuzan Thune into the
Lasar Sarkhon. Sgt Archie Venzenzo became Sgt Ernie Venzenzo-based now, less on
Archie Bunker and more Escape from New York’s Cabbie, played Earnest Bornine.
When I re-imagined the Lasar Sarkhon
character, I had just read Gideon Faust: Warlock At Large-a Star-Reach comic
drawn and written by Howie Chaykin-about a Victorian age wizard, fighting
demons. He was blonde, with a goatee and a dark stripe running through with
hair-kind of like Doctor Strange's silver streaks. He had a mystical walking
cane and Tardis inspired coach-bigger on the inside than outside. I renamed
Lasar Sarkhon-a name I wanted to use for another character-more similar to
Marvels Adam Sarkhon,in stature and personality. I renamed the character, from
‘’the Last Fare’’ short story, that was Lasar Sarkhon as his cousin Professor
Gideon Sarkhon’s figured, Gideon Fauste, was more similar to the Doctor
Strange/Obi Wan Kenobi /Doctor Who inspired Time-Sorcerer.I put him on earth,
who was situated in New York and associated with Sgt.Bernie Venchenzo-the EX
Special Forces Viet Nam Vet turned New York Cabbie. Using Gideon Fauste could
have this Time-Sorcerer, as a kind of paranormal investigator, demon fighter,
supernatural investigator, living in New York. I could give him a mystical
walking cane, with all sorts of weapons. Faust, kind of reminded me of Jon
Pertwee’s Doctor Who and with Tardis inspired coach, it did not take a genius
to figure out one idea could lead another. If Chaykin failed to see the
similarity, being a sex maniac, I did and would use it to reform my Lasar
Sarkhon creation. Comic creators often miss an operutnity, to create an
interesting character-write and drawn something, to see print and it flops only
to move on to other’’ So called Important Work.’’ -usually some crap they in
love and stick with for a few years. The Meat Puppet press, then simply follows
one article up with another, on that subject, because it’s a greater success, then
previous work. The earlier creations get left in the dumpster, because everyone
follows the successful creation and not the losers. Those get forgotten until
someone creation another character similar that does work.
Gideon Sarkhon, was a character, I could
play around with-give him a wife, sort of based on Doctor Strange’s Climaxed
personality elements of Susan Storm/Richards-a.k.a the Invisible Girl/Woman. I
could give a son-sort of a young, version of himself, using elements from
Johnny Storm-a hotheaded type and a sister Rachel Sarkhon-a left over from the
previous Lasar Sarkhon era.
Gideon Sarkhon would still have the
Sarkhon Mansion, the planetary orbiting Star Castle-a sort of huge. Close
Encounters Mother ship/Star Wars Bespin City inspired Atlantean Space Station.
Bernie Venchenzo’s cab could fly, hover, jump through time and have all sorts
of James Bond gadgets hidden all it’s interior-machine guns in the headlights,
anti gravity hovering wheels. like Nick Fury’s Ferrari and Back to the Futures
DeLorean. Some of these elements would be re-used later for Professor Thuzan
Thune Sarkhon.
My idea, at this point, was make a sort of
combination of Marvels Comics Doctor Strange /Jon Pertwee’s Doctor Who, but
with Fantastic Four, nimus those powers and have travel around time and space,
fighting evil.Professor Gideon Sarkhon would later evolve or revert to
Professor Thuzan Thune Sarkhon,as a yet another spin off member of the Amazing
Imperial House of Sarkhon.
Doc Thompson.
Gideon Sarkhon would inspired partially
the name of my Omega Warrior Colonel Gideon Fate.

Welcome to the Star*Reach Classics! The
anthology reprinting the very best of the 1970s Star*Reach series, the book
that revolutionized both the comics and science-fiction/fantasy genre and
bridged the gap between underground comics, traditional (though often scorned)
Marvel/DC books and mainstream (as much mainstream as they could be) sci-fi and
fantasy books. The child of Mike Friedrich that helped to bring about the
independent comics boom in the 1980s and paved the way for the modern graphic
novel! think he's in the first seven issues for sure, with stories about Cody
Starbuck and Gideon Faust, Warlock at Large. Great, underrated stuff.
Welcome to Star*Reach, where even the sky
isn't the limit to the imagination...
Note: Mature themes, including sex and
nudity. These aren't your grandpa's Stan Lee comics, just like Gideon Faust is
not the superheroic Doctor Strange.
